The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) highlighted the use of advanced irrigation systems to properly maintain parks and green spaces while saving water substantially.
The use and advantages of the advanced irrigation system were communicated by Mohamed Abdullah Abbas, Head of the Public Parks Department in Doha Municipality, during his talk with the local Arabic daily Arrayah.
“The municipality is making use of advanced systems that are controlled remotely via an electronic application or via the website. This is with the aim of saving water used for irrigation. Currently, about 90 percent of gardens in Doha Municipality are irrigated in this way. These advanced systems have contributed to saving water by between 50 and 60 percent according to the nature of the crops,” he said.
He explained that the municipality is keen to maintain and preserve the public parks and green spaces in order to maintain their beauty and appearance.
According to Abdullah Abbas, “The maintenance works continue throughout the year, especially the intensive maintenance operations that are carried out in April and October.
“We make sure that the parks remain open during these operations. We are satisfied with only partial closure and the ministry has contracts with the private sector to maintain these parks. These contracts are renewed every three years,” he added.
He pointed out that the Public Parks Department in Doha Municipality is responsible for the supervision of about 50 percent of the parks in the country.
It supervises and maintains 43 parks within its administrative limits. These are in addition to other green spaces on roads and the Corniche.
Mohamed Abdullah Abbas stated that the department works closely with other bodies such as the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) to carry out its operations.
