In recognition of World Food Safety Day, which falls on June 7, Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) is organizing a host of activities and events, virtually.
The Ministry is marking the occasion under the theme “Safe food today for a healthy tomorrow,” part of the permanent theme of the event “Food Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility.”
MoPH will run online workshops on food safety focused on family-run businesses and a workshop titled “Common Food Safety Mistakes” tailored for food importing companies.
The Ministry will also feature awareness messages on social media and via text messages, in addition to publishing short videos on food safety and distributing leaflets with food safety guidelines at supermarkets and malls.
The MoPH building will be lit in orange to recognize World Food Safety Day.

Director of Food Safety and Environmental Health at MoPH, Wassan Abdulla Al-Baker said that the World Food Safety Day is an important occasion to promote food safety and highlight the unsafe food risks on health.
“The Ministry of Public Health is keen to ensure the safety of food sold at outlets in Qatar, food compliance to health standards and intensifying food safety awareness campaigns which focus on the right and safe ways related to food safety, such as shopping, food preparation, transport, display, sale, storage, general hygiene and health practices,” Al-Baker said.
The Ministry official mentioned that samples of locally-produced food products are tested to avoid any microbial and chemical risks.
The testing of the samples is done with state-of-art devices, in line with the highest standards of Codex Alimentarius Commission, World Health Organization and GCC Standardization Organization.
The food testing is carried out at the MoPH central laboratories, which are accredited internationally and ranked among the top 15 laboratories globally, Al-Baker added.
The labs adopt approved and reliable analysis methods based on the ISO 17025:2017 quality management guidelines.
An online system has been developed for issuing health and food certificates and paying the fees associated with exported food certificates, food destruction certificates and food tests requested by importing and exporting companies.
