Qatar’s ace high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim, aiming to win an unprecedented fourth world title, is now one step away from his dream.

The 32-year-old Qatari champion, who took the world titles in 2017 London, 2019 Doha and 2022 Eugene, made the Budapest final’s qualification mark of 2.28M without a single misstep.

At the National Athletics Centre, the Qatari became one of only three athletes to progress to the final without hitting the bar even once. Japan’s Ryoichi Akamatsu and USA’s Juvaughn Harrison also progressed to the final without a hitch.

Meanwhile, Italian Gianmarco Tamberi, with whom Mutaz famously shared his Tokyo Olympics gold, made it to the final by the skin of his teeth. He was able to clear the 2.28M mark only on his final attempt.

Korea’s Sanghyeok Woo and Ukraine’s Andrii Protsenko, who claimed silver and bronze behind Mutaz in Eugene, also progressed to the final in Budapest.

Ukraine’s Oleh Doroshchuk, Italy’s Marco Fassinotti, Germany’s Tobias Potye, Australia’s Brandon Starc, USA’s Shelby Mcewen, Poland’s Norbert Kobielski and Cuba’s Luis Enrique Zayas are the other jumpers who made it to the final round.

Meanwhile, Qatar’s Bassem Hemeida secured a semifinal spot in the men’s 400M hurdles event. He finished third in Heat 3 with a time of 49.50sec, ending behind Frenchman Wilfried Happio (48.63) and Norweigian World record holder Karsten Warholm (48.76).

Hemeida, an Asian Athletics Championships gold medallist, will compete in the first heat of the semifinals on Monday night.
