Starting this week, Qatar has activated its four-phased plan for the gradual lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.

The first phase, which began yesterday, saw the opening of several mosques, shops at malls and shopping centers, and parks, among others.

While this brings joy to many citizens and residents who have been waiting for the easing of restrictions, the plan comes with certain mandatory precautionary and preventive guidelines to be followed to contain the spread of the virus.

According to the Executive Director, Corporate Infection Prevention at Hamad Medical Corporation, Dr Jameela Al Ajmi, the public has a key role to play in curbing the spread of COVID-19 by following all necessary infection prevention measures.

"This virus will be in our world for some time to come and we know that as public health measures and restrictions are lifted, some degree of COVID-19 transmission will be unavoidable; therefore, we must all continue to follow protective measures to help prevent the spread of the virus," Dr Al Ajmi said.

"We must continue to maintain physical distancing practices, good hand hygiene, and to not leave home if feeling sick. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, get tested,” she added.

People must remember that there is still no vaccine or cure for the virus yet. Everyone in the community should contribute to balancing the risks, the HMC expert underlined.

"We must not become complacent in following infection prevention measures. These life-saving practices will be essential to protecting the members of our community who are most likely to experience serious illness should they contract COVID-19,” added Dr Al Ajmi.

The expert mentioned that the easing of restrictions will happen gradually as the risk of severe illness remains high for some individuals such as the elderly and people with compromised immune systems.

She urged everyone to follow infection prevention measures but urged parents of children to be particularly vigilant in making sure children follow the measures properly.

"Parents should reinforce the importance of regular hand-washing and proper respiratory etiquettes, such as covering coughs and sneezes," she said.

"It is also important for parents to reinforce ‘no sharing’ policies and to help children understand the need for social distancing and to avoid kissing or hugging, especially when spending time with more vulnerable persons, such as grandparents or a sick family member,” Dr Al Ajmi explained.

She further said that although the lifting of restrictions will take effect in a controlled manner, everyone should realize the importance of their actions in ensuring the safety of the community at large.

"Be respectful of each other’s space and be prepared for things to be different. Remember that each decision you take affects the well-being of others," she highlighted.

For any queries, or concerns related to COVID-19 in Qatar, the public can contact a 24/7 hotline set up by the Ministry. The hotline number is 16000 and is toll-free.
