Qatar, which is home to the Al Jazeera Network, has always stood for media freedom and openness.
Taking things further, Qatar’s Advisory Council has discussed a draft law that will see the establishment of a Media City in the country, reported Gulf Times.
The discussion was initiated during the regular weekly session of the council under the chairmanship of the Advisory Council Speaker HE Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud.
The Council discussed a draft law establishing the media city, they decided to refer it to the Information and Cultural Affairs Committee for consideration and report thereon to the Council.#QNA
The Media City is being envisioned as a legal entity with an independent budget and is aimed at managing and developing local media activity as well as attracting international media and technology companies.
Research and training institutions in the field of traditional and digital media will also be welcomed to the Media City, according to The Peninsula.
The Media City is aimed at achieving economic and professional integration between different state projects and to provide an interactive environment by licensed companies working in the Media City.
The Media City will have authority to grant licenses for television and radio broadcasting and for publishing and distribution of newspapers, magazines, and books for eligible companies.
After preliminary discussions, the Advisory Council referred the matter to the Information and Cultural Affairs Committee for consideration, according to Qatar Tribune.
In September, the State Cabinet had approved a draft law for the establishment of a media city.
The media city will also be aimed at supporting and encouraging projects and establishment of investment funds in media.
