Two key entities — Qatar Airways and Hamad International Airport (HIA) — have joined hands with Expo 2023 Doha as the six-month-long horticultural exhibition gears up to become the next mega event hosted by the country.

On Thursday, the three entities formalised the agreement during a ceremony hosted by Qatar’s Ministry of Municipality. It is a significant milestone whereby all parties will work together to elevate Expo 2023 Doha’s tourism potential.

The Expo 2023 Doha, which is set to run at Al Bidda Park from October 2 to March 28, 2024, is expected to attract over three million visitors. It will be a first-of-its-kind initiative to be held in Qatar and the Middle East.

Qatar’s national carrier, after a year of growth marked by the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, will continue to raise the country’s profile as an unparalleled destination by promoting Expo 2023 Doha as a must-visit attraction for travellers and business visitors.

Crowned the Best Airport in The World’ for the second consecutive year in 2022 and ‘World’s Best Airport Shopping’ in 2023, HIA is the gateway to Qatar offering unique experiences, world-class infrastructure and services to all passengers.

The airport will become Expo 2023 Doha’s strategic partner, supporting the hosting of Expo visitors from the region and around the world.

The first months of 2023 registered a record number of visitors in Qatar compared to the previous record in 2016 for the same period of time, marking the revival of tourism in the country and the post-World Cup momentum.

Qatar Airways Group CEO Akbar Al Baker said, “A number of significant events are taking place in Qatar in 2023 which will build upon our investment in infrastructure and our hospitality industry. We can offer more specialised tourism and world-class sporting activities including the Geneva International Motor Show and the Formula 1 Grand Prix. The Expo 2023 Doha Qatar is a key international addition to the calendar and will see a major focus on Climate Change.  I’m delighted to announce that Qatar Airways will be a leading sponsor, which will see the airline promote the Expo and encourage visitors through compelling travel packages”.

HIA’s Chief Operating Officer Engr. Badr Mohammed Al Meer said, “We’re honoured to be one of the official partners of the Expo 2023 Doha and look forward to welcoming visitors to this prestigious event. As the main entry point for travellers, we aim to offer passengers arriving to the State of Qatar an unmatched airport experience and seamless connectivity to the city of Doha and the event.”.

Expo 2023 Doha Secretary General Mohammed Ali Alkhoori added: “We’re looking forward to starting our collaboration with Qatar Airways and Hamad International Airport, key the drivers of the country’s travel and tourism industry. Tourism attractiveness will be one of the Expo 2023 Doha central pillars. With an exciting entertainment offering to visitors of all ages – including kids and families - Expo will become the main country’s highlight between the end of 2023 and early 2024”.

China, who held the last Expo in 2021, had handed over the event’s flag to Qatar during a colourful ceremony.
