The unjust siege of Qatar, which on June 5 will enter its second year, should be immediately lifted as the fabricated crisis has serious consequences for the region’s security and stability, the United Nations Security Council was told.
“The unjust siege and arbitrary unilateral measures have been imposed without any legal or realistic justification,” Ambassador HE Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Qatar’s permanent representative to the UN, was quoted as saying by Gulf Times.
In a statement delivered at the official meeting of the UN Security Council on ‘the situation in the Middle East including the Palestinian question,’ she pointed out that the siege was aimed at achieving special objectives that ran counter to provisions of international law.
“These objectives, which are incompatible with the fundamental principles of the multilateral international order and the basis of friendly relations and human rights, have negative impacts on regional and international co-operation for maintaining international peace and security,” she said.
The Ambassador stressed the importance of dialogue in resolving differences and tensions in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.
She pointed out that this was what Qatar had been demanding since the beginning of the crisis, based on its responsibility as a member of the UN and a key partner of the international community in addressing common challenges, reported The Peninsula.
She reiterated Qatar’s commitment to the mediation of Kuwaiti Emir HH Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah and its appreciation to the countries that supported this mediation in order to resolve the crisis.
