Qatar creates Local Organising Committee for next year's AFC Asian Cup

After the 2022 FIFA World Cup, footballing action will return to the country once again next year when it hosts its third AFC Asian Cup from January 12 to February 10, 2024.

The Qatar Football Association (QFA), in a statement, said its President Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani was named as Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.

Qatar, who are the reigning Asian champions, will be hosting the prestigious tournament for the third time after 1988 and 2011.

Qatar had become the first nation to qualify for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup in Dubai and later went on to win the title undefeated.

QFA Secretary-General Mansour Mohamed Al Ansari, a member of the Local Organising Committee, will also act as the tournament’s Managing Director.

The other members of the Local Organising Committee are Ahmed Abdulaziz Al Buainain, Ibrahim Khalil Al Muhannadi, Hani Talib Ballan, Ghanem Ali Al Kuwari, Mohamed Al Suwaidi, and a representative from the Ministry of Interior.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced Qatar as the host country last October after China withdrew because of its ‘zero-Covid’ policy. China had won hosting rights to the 2023 event in June 2019.
