Qatar's efforts to promote sustainability and adapt to climate change are beginning to bear fruit, with a growing number of government and commercial entities embracing sustainable practices and green building standards.
Following the government's lead in developing green buildings, the private sector has responded with creative sustainable building designs that reduce energy and water use while also lowering waste.
According to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Qatar has 1,406 sustainability-certified buildings. In a tweet yesterday, the Ministry pointed out that Qatar has the highest number of buildings with Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) green building standards.
The Gulf Organization for Research and Development (GORD) green building rating system gives GSAS to existing facilities that operate and maintain efficiently.
GSAS, which represents green building laws under Qatar Construction Specifications, aims to improve building design, construction, and operations while also recognizing sustainability concerns specific to the built environment in the Middle East and North Africa.
Qatar has made great efforts to maintain sustainability and combat climate change in a variety of ways. Qatar and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of climate change adaptation and green growth at the GGGI headquarters in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
This is part of the county's larger initiatives, including reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 25 percent in a business-as-usual scenario by 2030, improving ambient air quality standards, and updating limit values by 2024.
Adapted by the Qatar National Environment and Climate Change Strategy (QNE) and unveiled recently, this charts the nation's environmental path to the next chapter.
The strategy will also serve as a blueprint for achieving Qatar's 2030 goals while also laying the groundwork for long-term environmental management.
