Qatar Museum’s ‘Fannek’ initiative is an annual month dedicated to public art. In an effort to take art beyond four walls, QM is offering their Culture Pass members an exclusive opportunity to explore Qatar’s public art scene through tours, talks and workshops.

‘Fannek’ will feature a variety of informative and culturally stimulating events, revealing the contributions of many public artworks and artists to Qatar’s vibrant art scene. Under this initiative, all four events are set to take place this November.

On November 7, the event will comprise of a tour of Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) where guests can experience Richard Serra’s famous ‘7’ overlooking Doha’s skyline as well as an interactive artwork entitled ‘Folded Extracted Personified’ inspired by MIA’s collection by British artist, Liam Gillick.

The event on November 14 will take place in Zikreet, where Culture Members will get a unique tour that combines modernity and nature. East-West/West-East by Richard Serra spans over a kilometre in length and crosses the peninsula of the Brouq Nature Reserve.

The event on November 21 will include a tour of the National Museum of Qatar and focus on artwork such as Jean-Michel Othoniel’s fountain sculptures ‘Alfa’ and Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed Al Thani’s ‘Motherland’, representing the region’s last generation of women who wore the battoula.

On November 28, the final ‘Fannek’ event will showcase Qatar Museum’s ‘Jedariart’ initiative, an open call that invited artists to activate Doha’s city walls with creative street art. At the Fire Station, members can now experience Doha’s new urban surroundings against the city’s traditional backdrop.

According to Eng. Abdulrahman Ahmad Al-Ishaq, Acting Director of Public Art Department at Qatar Museums, “Our annual Fannek initiative is dedicated to highlighting the importance of public art in humanising urban spaces and sparking constructive debate on topical issues of global relevance.

“Our Culture Pass members can look forward to a host of tours and workshops that will showcase the striking public art installations that weave together the country’s past and present while imagining its future.”
