Qatar has spared no effort to support Syria and has remained committed to alleviate the plight of those suffering in the country.

In another such endeavor, upon the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar has announced a new pledge of $100 million for the Syrian people.

His Excellency Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani made the announcement regarding Qatar’s pledge yesterday at the Brussels IV Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region.

During his speech at the conference, which was held through video conferencing, HE the Minister said the new pledge stems from Qatar’s belief to fulfill its international and humanitarian obligations toward the brotherly people of Syria.

Qatar’s actual assistance to the Syrian people has surpassed $2 billion since the start of the Syrian crisis, HE Sheikh Mohamed mentioned.

HE the Minister reaffirmed Qatar’s firm support to the international efforts focused on finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis, centered on the first Geneva Declaration of 2013 and the relevant Security Council resolutions, especially Resolution No. 2254.

HE Sheikh Mohamed thanked the European Union and the United Nations for the invitation to hold the conference. He also appreciated the participating nations for their efforts to come to the aid of the Syrian people, particularly amid the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the economies of different economies.

As the world faces unprecedented times, the suffering of the Syrian people has been aggravated as they face a lack of the most basic necessities such as water, food, infrastructure, and basic social services such as education and health, HE the Minister highlighted.

This is in addition to the number of displaced people, that reached 12 million.

Furthermore, HE Sheikh Mohamed emphasized the need to find a political solution to end the Syrian crisis, calling this a responsibility of the international community.

Earlier in June, Qatar announced its pledge of $10 million to the World Health Organization, which followed after the country's pledge of $20 million to the Global Alliance for Vaccinations and Immunizations (GAVI).
