Qatar has always had a strong humanitarian spirit. However, it has been most evident in recent months as the world faced the COVID-19 pandemic.

The country has come to the support of several nations around the world by providing them urgent medical aid to tackle the virus.

On a number of occasions, Qatar has emphasized the need for the international community to come together and unify efforts to combat this infectious disease.

Earlier in June, Qatar pledged $10 million to the World Health Organization (WHO) to support finding testing equipment, treatment, and vaccine for COVID-19.

This was in addition to its $20 million contribution to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) that was announced by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani at a virtual summit attended by representatives of more than 50 countries.

Now, under HH the Amir's guidance, Qatar, represented by Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), has inked a three-year contribution agreement with the Global Fund.

The $50 million agreement seeks to end the epidemics of Aids, tuberculosis and malaria by 2030 thereby contributing to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

This agreement will further consolidate the partnership between QFFD and the Global Fund established in 2017. QFFD had contributed $10 million for the first funding cycle under the partnership.

The Global Fund's long-standing commitment to fight Aids, tuberculosis and malaria as epidemics is well aligned with QFFD's overarching goal of promoting health as a central component for sustainable development and empowering people to lead healthy lives.

"QFFD is proud of the strategic partnership forged with the Global Fund over the past years; we are proud that our partnership continues to provide smart and effective health investments and, in doing so, contributes to saving millions of lives by providing treatment and healthcare services to millions of vulnerable people in more than 100 countries," the statement said.
