The State of Qatar signed a contract to implement its pavilion participating in the International Horticultural Exhibition “Expo 2027 Yokohama”, signaling the start of the implementation phase of its participation in this international event hosted by Japan during the period from March 19 to September 26, 2027.
The contract was signed by His Excellency Mr. Jaber bin Jarallah Al-Marri, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Japan and Commissioner General of the State of Qatar’s pavilion at the exhibition, while it was signed on behalf of the company responsible for implementing the pavilion by Mr. Yakubu Turini, representative of “Studio Dodechi”.
The contract includes the design, construction, operation, maintenance and dismantling of the pavilion, with the aim of providing an integrated experience that reflects the vision of the State of Qatar and its achievements in the areas of sustainability, innovation, food security and urban development.
In this context, His Excellency Mr. Jaber bin Jarallah Al-Marri affirmed that the signing of the contract represents an important milestone in the preparations for Qatar’s participation in the exhibition, and reflects the State of Qatar’s keenness to present a pavilion that keeps pace with its international standing and embodies its vision towards a more sustainable future.
His Excellency said that the State of Qatar’s pavilion at Expo 2027 Yokohama is the fruit of national cooperation that combines academic creativity and institutional vision. It started from a national competition that aimed to empower young talents and involve them in designing a national project that represents the country to the world and embodies Qatar’s story and vision in the areas of sustainability, innovation and quality of life.
He added that the pavilion will form a global platform to showcase the achievements of the State of Qatar and its pioneering experiences in the fields of environment, food security and sustainable development, in addition to contributing to enhancing cultural and knowledge exchange with the various participating countries.
For her part, Dr. Faeqa Ashkanani, Deputy Commissioner-General and Head of the Preparatory Committee for the State of Qatar’s participation in “Expo 2027 Yokohama”, confirmed that the signing of the implementation contract represents the transition to a new phase of the project after the completion of the planning and design aspects of the pavilion.
Ashkanani said that the current phase focuses on transforming the design vision into an integrated experience that highlights leading Qatari initiatives in the fields of sustainability, food security and the environment, and offers visitors a knowledge and cultural experience that reflects the development of the State of Qatar and its contributions to addressing global development challenges.
The pavilion embodies an innovative architectural vision that was selected through a national competition launched by the Ministry of Municipality in partnership with Qatar University and Msheireb Properties, with the participation of 40 female students from the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at the College of Engineering at Qatar University, as part of supporting architectural innovation and empowering young national talents to contribute to the design of projects with an international presence.
The competition resulted in the student “Aya Kambal Al-Reeh” winning first place with her design, and her design concept was adopted as the basis for the State of Qatar’s pavilion at the exhibition.
The winning design is titled “The Flourishing of the Neighborhood,” and its vision is inspired by the architectural language of Msheireb, by re-presenting the traditional Qatari neighborhood concept in a contemporary style that combines modern architecture, nature and community. It consists of four main wings: The Beginning, The Roots, The Growth and The Blooming, with the use of local Qatari plants and trees within the spatial experience of visitors.
The design is based on Qatari architectural principles and modern sustainability standards, taking into account the climatic characteristics of Yokohama, thus achieving a balance between local identity and environmental performance, and reflecting the values of innovation, sustainability and community engagement.
The International Horticultural Exhibition "Expo 2027 Yokohama" is one of the most prominent international exhibitions specializing in the fields of horticulture, sustainability and the environment. It is expected to attract millions of visitors from around the world and provides a global platform for exchanging experiences and showcasing innovative solutions to environmental and developmental challenges.
