The Qatar Society of Engineers has launched the Qatar BIM Award, a new platform designed to recognise leading experiences, projects and practices in Building Information Modeling (BIM) across Qatar. Pasted markdown
The award was announced at the conclusion of the QATAR BIM 2026 Conference, which brought together professionals and stakeholders to discuss the current use of BIM, its challenges and future development. Pasted markdown
Four award categories
The Qatar BIM Award will include four main categories covering:
- Individuals
- Government entities
- Contracting companies
- Consulting firms and offices
The structure is intended to open participation to different parts of Qatar’s BIM ecosystem and highlight leading practices and innovative projects. Pasted markdown
The Qatar Society of Engineers said further details — including subcategories, evaluation criteria, nomination conditions, timelines, judging and award procedures — will be announced later. Pasted markdown
Call for unified national BIM framework
Among the conference’s key recommendations was the development of a unified national framework for BIM.
The proposed framework would set out basic technical and regulatory requirements and help standardise BIM implementation while improving the quality and efficiency of project management throughout the project lifecycle. Pasted markdown
The conference also recommended developing a unified national BIM guide and increasing the use of ISO 19650 standards for managing digital information and data across projects. Pasted markdown
Greater integration with AI and digital twins
Another major recommendation was to strengthen the integration of BIM with artificial intelligence and modern digital technologies.
Suggested areas include design, project management, data analysis, risk assessment and cost management, alongside wider use of digital twin technology for managing assets, facilities and smart-city development. Pasted markdown
The conference also called for greater training and professional development for engineering and technical personnel, support for research and development, and the creation of a national platform connecting government, private-sector, academic and professional organisations involved in BIM. BIM already used in major Qatar projects
Qatar Society of Engineers Chairperson Eng. Amna Mohammed Al-Naama said BIM has become an important tool for complex projects because it allows different components to be studied, designed and analysed before construction begins. Pasted markdown
She cited the National Museum of Qatar and several Ashghal road projects among notable examples where BIM technology has been used. Pasted markdown
According to Al-Naama, BIM can help facilitate construction, shorten implementation periods and reduce risks by identifying potential problems before work begins on site. Pasted markdown
Ashghal expands BIM beyond modelling
Eng. Amna Al-Baker, BIM Team Leader at the Public Works Authority, said Ashghal’s use of BIM has developed beyond coordination and modelling into an integrated engineering information management system supporting decisions throughout a project’s lifecycle. Pasted markdown
She also highlighted the growing opportunities created by combining BIM with digital twins, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, positioning BIM as a foundation for the next generation of projects in Qatar. Pasted markdown
The QATAR BIM 2026 conference included five panel discussions and five specialised working papers, covering standards, legislation, civil and industrial applications, GIS integration, AI, digital twins and project, risk and cost management.
