Qatar is all set to introduce a new airbase in the country — named the Tamim Air Base — in addition to carrying out expansion work on the existing Al Udeid Air Base, a top official has said.

Major-General (Pilot) Ahmed Ibrahim Al Malki, who is the Deputy Commander of the Amiri Air Force, announced the plans in an interview with the Altalaya magazine of the Directorate of Defence Communications at the Ministry of Defence.

Major General Al Malki said the Al Udeid Air Base would be expanded and the Tamim Air Base developed to accommodate new aircraft and systems that have been introduced to the air force, reported Gulf Times.

“These include the French Rafale fighters, American F-15 fighters, Eurofighter Typhoon and other advanced aircraft. In addition, command and control systems will be developed by introducing the latest radar systems and communications,” he was quoted as saying.

The development of the Amiri Air Force took a quantum leap forward under the leadership of HH The Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, he said.

While the equipments have doubled, new systems have been brought into service including fighter jets, transport aeroplanes and helicopters, reported The Peninsula.

He also touched upon the reorganisation of the Amiri Air Force, saying things were currently under review and that everything would be revealed soon.

The top official said that most important role played by the Amiri Air Force was in the protection of the country’s air space, providing deterrence and ground attack.

This year, the air force had welcomed the first batch of females as pilot candidates, he was quoted as saying by Qatar Tribune.
