Qatar will open their AFC U23 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026 Group B campaign on Wednesday against a confident United Arab Emirates side, with both teams viewing the fixture as a crucial first step in a highly competitive tournament.
Having come through a strong preparation phase, Qatar captain Jaseem Al Sharshani said he expected a tough examination against the UAE, underlining the importance of starting the group stage on the front foot.
“Generally, the first match is always the most difficult. UAE are playing well, so we’re looking forward to the match. The players are doing their best, and we’ve a new squad now. We aren’t thinking too much about the tournament in general, and we’re going to take it match by match,” said Al Sharshani.

With Qatar having qualified for their second successive FIFA World Cup Finals, the Al Ahli SC midfielder is particularly motivated, seeing the tournament as a key opportunity to push for a place in Juan Lopetegui’s senior squad.
“This is a very important tournament, particularly for me personally. I believe this is a very important opportunity to prove ourselves to join the first team for the World Cup,” he said.

Across the field, UAE head coach Marcelo Broli believes his side’s extended preparation has placed them in a strong position heading into the opener.
“Qatar aren’t easy to play with, but we’re confident with our players. We’ve spent a long time together, and we know each other very well. We spent two years with the team to understand the players better. This Asian Cup brings together the best teams, so every game is important,” said Broli.
Despite the absence of injured forward Sultan Adil, Broli remains optimistic, with Montpellier striker Junior Ndiaye and several players with senior international experience expected to lead the challenge.
“We do have excellent players. Sultan is injured, but the opportunity is there for the rest of the players to prove themselves,” he said. “We’re focusing on collective work, not individuals. The absence of some players means others can have the chance to play and express themselves,” he added.
