If you have been thinking about going to the Maldives on a dream vacation, then it is better if you reconsidered the timing.

This is because there has been an outbreak of H1N1, or Swine Flu, in the country. Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) issued an advisory for Qatar’s citizens, warning them against travelling to the Maldives due to the spread of the H1N1 virus there, reported Gulf Times.

A day earlier, the Ministry’s official Twitter handle had tweeted it out in Arabic as well.

Maldives Finest, a website that is regularly tracking the situation in the Maldives, reported that four people have died so far, with the fourth victim being a pregnant woman.

It said that the country’s largest private hospital — ADK — has opened vaccination points for the general public and that they were witnessing long queues. It also added that schools had resumed after a break, but only about 20% of students have returned to class.

It further reported that so far, 185 patients have been identified as having contracted the disease. There are also reports that the current stock of vaccines is not enough for the entire population and that WHO officials are rushing 30,000 more doses to the country.

Meanwhile, Maldives Independent, reported that the cases of Swine Flu was on the rise. However, it said there was no need for alarm. It said that unlike in 209, the H1N1 flu virus was circulating as normal seasonal flu. It said more people have since developed immunity and the virus does not spread as fast.
