Qatar’s Ashraf Amjad Elseify hurled the hammer to a season’s season-best distance of 72.42M at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium to finish second in the Hangzhou Asian Games on Saturday.

He ended up behind China’s Wang Qi (72.97) and ahead of Uzbekistan’s Sukhrob Khodjaev (70.79).

Ashraf, who was looking to defend his gold medal from the 2018 Palembang Asian Games, started slowly with a 69.26M throw. While his second attempt produced the medal-winning distance, he never quite reached those levels again.

His third throw was shorter (70.20) while his fourth attempt ended in a foul. He rounded off the competition with 71.67M and 72M throws.

Wang Qi found his gold medal-winning throw on his fifth attempt.
