The Qatar Football Association has called on the Asian Football Confederation to consistently apply the principles of transparency and consultation in a way that preserves its credibility and strengthens trust among its members.
QFA also stressed the importance of transparency and institutional governance in positions and statements issued in the name of the AFC's member national associations.
The call came in an official letter sent by QFA President HE Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al-Thani to the AFC regarding a joint statement issued on August 10 by the Union of European Football Associations, the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football, and the Asian Football Confederation.
HE Sheikh Hamad said QFA had not been consulted, formally or informally, before the statement was issued. He added that the association had received neither prior notice nor a draft and had not been given an opportunity to comment on or contribute to its content before it was published in the name of the AFC and on behalf of its members.
He stressed that any position presented as a collective stance of member associations should be based on a clear consultation process before being announced, and that collective consensus should not be assumed without referring to the members concerned.
The QFA President also highlighted the importance of proper institutional procedures and standards of governance and transparency, noting that issuing a statement on behalf of AFC members without consulting them raises questions about how such positions are adopted.
HE Sheikh Hamad requested written clarification from the AFC on whether any consultation process preceded the statement, the mechanism used to notify or consult national member associations, and the basis on which the AFC spoke collectively on behalf of its members.
He concluded the letter by emphasising his desire to address the matter constructively in a way that preserves the unity of Asian football associations and strengthens trust and cooperation among them.
The source also noted that the presidents of six Arab football associations, including those of Qatar, Egypt and Morocco, had previously announced their support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino and his efforts to lead and develop football internationally.
