1. Brunch at Coral in the InterContinental Doha

For my Top Pick this week I am recommending the Saturday Brunch at Coral in the InterContinental Doha. I went there during the weekend and I had a very good time. The all–dining restaurant offers sumptuous dishes from all around the world, featuring a cosmopolitan blend of Asian, Arabic, International, Mediterranean, and European cuisines.

Now that the weather is so nice I recommend sitting by the terrace and enjoy the view of the pool. The ambience is nice and quiet. The brunch starts at 12:30 pm and finishes at 3:30 pm. I loved the Tex-Mex dishes and the pizzas. In terms of the price, it is cheaper than most brunches in town. From 195 QAR to 250 QAR. The Friday brunch is more expensive.

For bookings call 4484-4444.

2. Al-Jemail (Fishermen's Village)

If you’re into discovering new places in Qatar, you’ll love my recommendation for this week. Last week, I had the opportunity to revisit a 19th century settlement in Al-Jemail, which is located in the northwestern tip of the country.

Today, Al-Jemail is an abandoned fishing village and gives visitors a glimpse of life outside the main city before the discovery of oil. The small village had an economy based on fishing and is popularly known as the fisherman’s village among local residents.

The village features abandoned residential structures, a mosque and community spaces from the 19th and 20th centuries. There’s quite a bit of exploring to do and visiting is a wonderful learning experience. Since it’s a fishing village, there is obviously a coast, but it is not great for swimming.

You may access the village from Madinat Al Shamal and head west. You don’t really need a 4x4 vehicle to access the area, but the path is very rocky and bumpy. I suggest you go there during the day and remember the route if you plan to stay till dark. Here’s the location on Google Maps. (Coordinates: N 26° 05' 41.89" E 51° 09' 17.94")

It is free for all to access, but please be respectful of the history of the place. Do NOT litter.

3. Friday the 13th: The Game (PS4/XBOXONE)

80s franchise horror and survival horror gaming combine in perfect harmony as this crowd funded game, based on the iconic Jason Vorhees, finally has a physical release. The game, which requires a network account, is an accurate translation of the slasher horror movies that dominated the 1980s and beyond, complete with music, locations and characters you will remember from the films. Play as either Jason himself, or one of many camp counsellors as you try and survive the night. The game is fun and addictive, and best played in groups. If you'd like to add me and play a game or two, hit me up on PS4 under the name: theburg511.

4. Mary is Happy, Mary is Happy (2013)

Mary is Happy, Mary is Happy (2013) is a coming of age story constructed from 410 consecutive tweets by @marylony - a random anonymous Thai schoolgirl. The film follows our main character Mary and her best friend Suri as they spend their last few months of high school attempting to create the perfect minimalist yearbook. All 410 real-life tweets appear on screen, serving as internal monologue, ironic counterpoint, hypnotic punctuation, and forcing the film to wander into bizarre asides involving cake store robberies, poison mushrooms, gun rampages, an increasingly fascistic school administration, and impromptu trips to Paris. By anchoring all of these disparate elements into a familiar portrait of a young, idealistic teenager saddled by lethargy and distracted by a hornet’s nest of inner thoughts, Thai director Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit deftly manages to turn what could easily be a farce or an empty exercise in formalist ostentation into a work of aching melancholy. Watch this film if you liked Ghost World (2001) or The Graduate (1967).

5. Firefly Burger

My top pick for this week is for all you foodies out in Qatar. Maybe you’ve heard of the Firefly Burger place located opposite Al Dar Exchange, out on Al Mirqab Street, but if you haven’t, you should definitely treat yourself to one of their juicy burgers.

I went there over the weekend to try their signature Kamikazi burger, which has double beef patties, sandwiched between two soft but sturdy buns, and comes with all the fixings.

The combination of sweet chilli sauce and their signature Firefly sauce made sure the burger was not dry, in addition to the different textures from the pickles, tomato, onion, and lettuce. What I loved especially was the abundance of cheddar cheese, which resulted in a really tasty burger.

The portions served at Firefly are huge for the prices that they charge, and if you want an extra smoky flavour infused in your burger, employees will smoke it in a covered glass dome, right at your table!

If you’re a burger fan, this place is definitely a thumbs up.

6. Cocoon grid-it

This weeks recommendation is Cocoon grid-it. I use it everyday and swear by it. If you have a tonne of wires that keep tangling and a lot of tiny things that you keep losing in your bag, this is awesome. Keep your stuff nicely organised and find the things you need really fast. They have different sizes of grid-it's so you can choose which fits in your bag perfectly. Happy organising!

7. Vikings: Season 5

Vikings wasn't always a big favourite of mine. The first season took some time to get going, but as characters develop and Ragnar's sons grow up, the plot thickens, and everything just gets a lot more interesting.

Season 5 premiered on the 29th of November, and did not disappoint.

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, Vikings is a History Channel drama series that follows the rise of the legendary Viking hero and ruler Ragnar Lothbrock, and of most of the Vikings, really, that left their mark on Europe.

The series is loosely based on real events and people (it is the History Channel after all). For example, Ragnar's brother, Rollo, is a direct ancestor of England's current Queen Elizabeth.

Aside from its solid storyline, watch the show for its amazing locations and excellent costume and production design.
