An official delegation from Qatar Red Crescent Society participated in the 50th General Assembly of the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organisation, held over three days in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
The assembly brought together senior representatives from the Mauritanian government, Arab National Societies, the League of Arab States and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
Discussions focused on regional humanitarian priorities, organisational governance and ways to strengthen humanitarian coordination across the Arab region.
QRCS was represented by Mohamed Ahmed Al-Beshri, Assistant Secretary-General for Communication and Resource Development, and Dr Aiham Ismail Al-Sukhni, Head of International Relations.
During the visit, the delegation met Shaheen bin Ali Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Ambassador to Mauritania, at the Qatari embassy in Nouakchott.
The meeting discussed QRCS’ humanitarian operations in Mauritania, future expansion plans to better serve vulnerable communities and ways to strengthen coordination between the embassy and QRCS in support of joint humanitarian initiatives.
Al-Beshri presented the ambassador with an honorary gift in recognition of his support for humanitarian work and bilateral cooperation. He also praised the embassy’s efforts to facilitate QRCS activities in the country.
The General Assembly’s procedural session approved the agenda, elected its office, reviewed the General Secretariat’s performance and financial reports, considered Arab nominations for international constitutional positions and appointed ARCO’s deputy secretary-general.
The plenary session was attended by Mauritania’s ministers of Social Affairs and Health, leaders of member National Societies and representatives of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Standing Commission of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, and the League of Arab States.
Delegates reviewed reports from the Executive Committee, the General Secretariat and ad hoc committees.
They also discussed proposed amendments to ARCO’s statutes and regulations, draft amendments to the IFRC constitution, the implementation of resolutions adopted during the 49th General Assembly and measures to strengthen governance and institutional performance.
Participants reviewed the humanitarian situation in several Arab countries, including Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia and Djibouti.
They also explored ways to enhance coordination among National Societies and improve humanitarian response to growing regional needs.
At the closing ceremony, Al-Beshri presented an honorary gift to the President of the Mauritanian Red Crescent in appreciation of the organisation’s role in hosting the assembly and promoting solidarity among Arab National Societies.
