The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) has reaffirmed its firm commitment to providing innovative solutions that contribute to enhancing the environmental sustainability goals associated with hosting the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 this year, coinciding with Earth Day 2022. During the 19-day tournament, more than 75 tonnes of organic waste was collected and composted. To accomplish this, a cohesive organic waste management system was implemented during the FIFA Arab Cup.

Qatar is providing innovative environmental solutions to support the sustainability goals associated with hosting the FIFA World Cup this year.

The FIFA Arab Cup, which took place in November and December 2021, served as a trial run for projects that would be delivered during the World Cup. Take a look at Qatar's environmental efforts to recycle and compost organic waste generated by hosting major football matches on Earth Day 2022.

During the 19-day tournament, more than 75 tonnes of organic waste was collected and composted. To accomplish this, a cohesive organic waste management system was implemented during the FIFA Arab Cup. The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) and the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 LLC worked on stadium sites to maximize the use of compostable food containers and cutlery, as well as raising awareness among the workforce about the proper use of waste segregation systems, which included a compostable green bin.

Additionally, the SC organized waste segregation activities and collaborated with Qatar-based Agricompost to compost organic waste generated during the tournament.

During the FIFA Arab Cup, 70% of waste from Al Bayt Stadium, which hosted the opening and final matches, was recycled, with the remainder being sent to a waste-to-energy plant.

Nasser Al Khalaf, Managing Director at Agricompost stated that, regardless of the type of organic waste, the recycling process aims to create compost that is suitable for growing plants, fruit, and vegetables. Some of the waste can also be used to feed animals. In general, anything derived from trees, animals, or plants can be recycled back into nature.

Earth Day is a yearly event held on April 22 to show support for environmental protection. It began in 1970 and has since grown to include a diverse range of events coordinated globally by earthday.org, involving 1 billion people from over 193 countries. 'Invest in our Planet' is the theme for 2022.
