Every year, the Fuwrait beach sees thousands upon thousands of the endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtles come to the shores for nesting and laying eggs. In order to protect the young, hatching turtles, authorities close the beach during nesting season.

This year, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has announced that the beaches will reopen from August 1, following the end of nesting season, reported Gulf Times.

The MME said that this year’s nesting season witnessed a remarkable hatching success rate, which exceeded 80%, and also an increase in the number of new nests  — 52, reported Qatar Tribune.

Over 3,000 new turtles were released to the sea during the 2017 season.

The research team at the Hawksbill Sea Turtle protection programme also gained significant practical experience after participation and supervision of specialists from the Centre for Environmental Sciences at Qatar University.

More than 3,000 turtles were released into the sea this season.
