UN reappoints Sheikha Moza as SDG Advocate

Recognizing Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser’s firm commitment to advancing the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Antonio Gueterres, Secretary-General of UN has re-appointed her as one of the 17 influential public figures, who are part of the 2019-2020 class of SDG Advocates.

These advocates have committed to raising awareness, inspiring greater ambition, and pushing for faster action on the SDGs, which were adopted by world leaders on 25 September 2015.

UN Member States had agreed to achieve the 17 SDGs by 2030. The SDGs focus on climate, poverty, health and education, economy among others.

To build the momentum for transformative, inclusive development by 2030, the Secretary-General’s SDG Advocates will use their unique platforms and leadership to inspire cross-cutting mobilization of the global community.

Peace, prosperity, people, planet, and partnerships are the principles that are at the center of the goals, which also drive the new class of SDG Advocates.

“The Advocates will be important partners for the Hub as they will be taking our messaging out into the world, amplifying our initiatives, participating in our events, and will be feeding into our work streams. We look forward to working and partnering closely with them going forward,” Guterres is quoted to have said by Gulf Times.

This is the second time Sheikha Moza has been appointed as an SDG Advocate, which is testament to Her Highness’ instrumental role in bolstering quality education, youth empowerment, and human development through her initiatives locally and internationally.

· Mr. Richard Curtis, Screenwriter, Producer and Film Director (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland)

· Ms. Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, Activist, Environment and Indigenous Rights (Republic of Chad)

· Mr. Jack Ma, Founder and Executive Chairman, Alibaba Group (People’s Republic of China)

· Mrs. Graça Machel, Founder, Graça Machel Trust (Republic of Mozambique)

· Ms. Dia Mirza, Actress and Film Producer, UN Environment Program Goodwill Ambassador for India (Republic of India)

· Dr. Alaa Murabit, Founder, The Voice of Libyan Women (Canada)
