Recent news on Sheikha Asma Al Thani climbing Mount Vinson, Antarctica's highest peak, made rounds a few days ago. The expedition consisted of completing the South Pole Ski the Last Degree Trip, which is a 111 km advanced skiing, ultimately making Sheikha Asma the first Qatari woman to conquer this feat.

UNHCR has partnered with Sheikha Asma to spread awareness of the unfortunate circumstances of the refugees and to advocate for the rights of those who have had no option but to flee due to the hapless circumstances they’ve been in.

“As a new year begins, we must not forget about the more than 84 million people who are forced to flee their homes in search of peace and hope. When I was in the freezing cold in Antarctica, I couldn’t help but think of the dangerous journeys some refugees have to take to bring their children to safety. I will continue to use my voice to make sure they are heard,” said Sheikha Asma.

Sheikha Asma is currently on a two-year expedition with the hopes of becoming the first Middle Eastern woman to finish the Explorer’s Grand Slam, which includes climbing seven summits and reaching the Northern and Southern poles. Her passion, courage, and determination to be the face of women's empowerment in the Arab world and beyond have made her a true inspiration for the masses.

“Her expeditions will not only continue to empower people to reach their own potential, but will also be a platform for raising awareness on and advocating for the rights of vulnerable refugees around the world”, Ayat El-Dewary, UNHCR Representative in the State of Qatar, said as he congratulated Sheikha Asma on her achievements.
