His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister and Prime Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al Thani and the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, inaugurated the United Nations House in Lusail on Saturday. The Deputy PM affirmed the role of Doha in facilitating multi-lateral action and remain a reliable address for dialogue and cooperation between parties.

The UN House was opened in Lusail and the delivery of His Excellency’s speech coincided with the fifth UN Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDC5). The event witnessed the presence of an entire lineup of Their Excellencies, UN officials and senior diplomats. HE Deputy Prime Minister also remarked that the presence of the prestigious audience members was testimony to the tireless and serious work.

This UN House opening is a part of the strategic framework between the State of Qatar and the United Nations along with the opening of many offices and bodies in Doha. He also mentioned that there is work underway to host more offices in Doha for UN’s other entities.

HE the Deputy PM also applauded the role of UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, for his exceptional leadership role at the United Nations. He also praised HE President of the current session of the UN General Assembly, Csaba Korosi.

Qatar’s pledge to use USD 500 million to fund various UN bodies and agencies was also a topic of the speech by HE Deputy Prime Minister. He reaffirmed the unwavering support of Qatar towards betterment of dialogue, cooperation, and exchange between the country and UN entities.

The LDC5, which is a historic event happening once every 10 years, is also a matter of pride for Qatar. The speech discussed how the conference aims to make a difference in the lives of millions of people in least developed countries. The efforts must continue to alleviate the burdens of the crises and challenges faced by these countries.

The United Nations House in Lusail, Qatar will contain the offices of United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), International Labour Organisation (ILO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations Education, Sciences and Culture Organization (UNESCO), Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Office of Counter Terrorism (UNOTC), and Office of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict (SRSG CAAC).
