The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has conferred an honorary doctorate on Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation and Education Above All, in recognition of her work in education, human rights and social development.
The degree was awarded during a university graduation ceremony presided over by Professor Letlhokwa George Mpedi, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UJ.
The honorary doctorate was received on Sheikha Moza’s behalf by Mubarak bin Nasser Al Khalifa, Qatar’s Ambassador to South Africa.
Recognition for education and human rights advocacy
The university said the honour reflects Sheikha Moza’s long-standing commitment to placing children’s education at the centre of global policy, while supporting social reform, equality and sustainable progress.
UJ highlighted her work at a time when access to education and protection of human rights remain central challenges in many parts of the world.
Professor Mpedi said the values represented by Sheikha Moza align with the university’s principles of education, social justice, equity and sustainable development.
Qatar Foundation and Education Above All highlighted
During the ceremony, the university highlighted Sheikha Moza’s role in the development of Qatar Foundation, founded in 1995, and the growth of Education City as a hub for universities, research institutions and education initiatives.
Her work through Education Above All, founded in 2012, was also recognised for supporting children whose education has been disrupted by conflict and displacement.
Programmes under the initiative have reached children across the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Focus on protecting education during conflict
The ceremony also highlighted efforts linked to the protection of education in conflict zones.
These include advocacy that contributed to greater international attention on attacks against schools, students and teachers, alongside the creation of the International Day to Protect Education from Attack.
UJ highlights shared values
The University of Johannesburg said Sheikha Moza’s work reflects values central to the institution, including inclusivity, transformation, accessibility and academic excellence.
The honorary doctorate recognises her wider global contribution to education, human development and social justice.
