US venture capital firm Activate Capital to open first international office in Doha

The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) and Activate Capital, a U.S. company specializing in growth equity investments in energy technologies and smart infrastructure, announced that Activate Capital has joined the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA)'s $3 billion Holding Fund Program.

ActiveCapital's investments in companies throughout their growth phases, from Series B funding rounds to pre-IPOs, with a focus on energy and electricity, terrestrial and space mobility technologies, digital industry, supply chain resilience, and climate change adaptation.

The QIA's commitment, through the Holding Fund, will support ActiveCapital's investment strategy in the Global South, with a focus on sectors undergoing a fundamental shift towards digitalization and decarbonization.

As part of the partnership, Activate Capital plans to open its first international office in Doha, with a group of leading investment professionals, including a partner with a focus on the Qatari market. The company will also seek to attract local, Qatari and international talent to form a diverse and highly qualified team, further cementing Qatar's position as a platform for investment and innovation across the Global South.

The Holding Fund Program, which was launched by the Qatar Investment Authority in February 2024, aims to attract leading global venture capital companies to Qatar, strengthen links and knowledge exchange with the global venture capital ecosystem, and accelerate the development of startups in Qatar and the region.

Dr. Mohsen Berzada, Director of Funds Management at the Qatar Investment Authority, said: "The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) has launched the Holding Fund Program to strengthen the links between the State of Qatar and the global venture capital ecosystem. Activate Capital has extensive experience in the targeted sectors, supporting our ambition to position Qatar as a leading hub for innovation, entrepreneurship and long-term investment."

Anoop Jacob, Co-Founder of Activate Capital, said: "We are delighted to welcome QIA as a limited partner and a member of our Limited Partners Advisory Committee. We agree with the Qatar Investment Authority that technology-based solutions will play a pivotal role in reshaping global infrastructure systems. We look forward to building a long-term partnership that will connect our portfolio, investment strategy and our upcoming office in Doha with Qatar's growing innovation ecosystem."

Activate Capital is the latest venture capital company to join the Holding Fund's program, reflecting the continued growth of the program and continued interest from major international investors in Qatar and the region. Activate Capital's focus on the climate, energy and industrial infrastructure sectors also enriches the sectoral expertise within the program, directly supporting the Qatar National Vision 2030 and highlighting the vital role that venture capital plays in financing sustainable innovation.
