Qatar has been making great strides in strengthening its public transport system.

With a focus to continuously improve in this area, the country launched the Doha Metro last year and also ran trials for the Automatic Rapid Transit (ART) system.

Additionally, earlier this year, Qatar Foundation introduced the electric-powered Education City tram, offering a state-of-the-art transport system to its community as well as visitors at QF.

In a bid to support the sustainability goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030 and to establish an integrated, world-class, multimodal transportation system, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) had also announced that it was working on a strategy and legislation related to the introduction of electric buses in Qatar.

Now, the Ministry has announced that 25 percent of public transport buses will be electric by 2022.

Public buses, public-schools' buses, and Doha Metro feeder buses will be gradually transformed into electric buses, to achieve the required percentage.

The idea is to reduce the rate of carbon emissions coming from traditional buses. This is a step forward to achieve QNV 2030 while prioritizing environmental sustainability.

Electric buses will be used in the main services during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, making it the first tournament to use electric mass transit buses.

This will showcase Qatar's commitment to clean energy solutions for transportation in the world, while hosting an exceptional world cup tournament that is environmentally friendly and "carbon neutral."

As part of the strategic plans, the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA), together with MoTC, is focusing efforts on developing an integrated network of electric vehicle charging devices to support the Ministry's plan.

Kahrama is operating some 30 electric chargers this year and about 100 chargers in 2021.

Additionally, there are plans to set up the largest electric charging station in the region in Lusail City, which is to run on solar energy and will be connected to all stations.

The MoTC is currently working with Mowasalat Corporation (Karwa) on a comprehensive plan to convert all taxis to electric-powered cars in the coming years.

Furthermore, under the Ministry's plan, 100 electric car parks are to be built in the first stage. Efforts in this regard are already in the works.
