The winners of the fifth edition of Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani Anti-Corruption Excellence Award were recognized at a ceremony held in Tunis yesterday.

The Anti-Corruption Excellence Award ceremony is held each year on World Anti-Corruption Day, December 9.

The award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated a willingness to fight systemic corruption and champion the message of anti-corruption among the people of the regions in which they operate.

This year’s winners included:

In the Academic Research and Education category:

Dr Adam Graycar (Australia) and Dr Michael Levi (United Kingdom)

In the Youth Creativity and Engagement category:

The non-governmental organization ONG Tolotsoa (Madagascar) and the Center for the Study of Democracy (Bulgaria)

In the Innovation category:

Riad Kobaissi (Lebanon) and Instituto Observatorio Politico e Socioambiental (Brazil)

In the Outstanding Achievement category:

Perdana Leadership Foundation (Malaysia)

Several dignitaries and senior officials were present on the occasion including: UN Special Advocate on the Prevention of Corruption and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center (ROLACC) Dr Ali bin Fetais al-Marri, President of the National Anti-Corruption Authority (INLUCC) of Tunisia Judge Imed Boukhris, and UN Assistant Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions Alexandre Zouev, among other international guests.

A monument to mark the 5th edition of the award was also unveiled during the ceremony. The monument, shaped like a hand of steel, echoes the solidarity of all the nations of the world as one hand, for all cooperating to combat corruption.

In a video speech, the Tunisian President Kais Said highlighted the significance of the event in finding new ways to counter corruption.

He mentioned that the issue of corruption is widespread and affects societies in several countries around the world.

Drawing attention to the causes of the spread of corruption, the Tunisian president stressed the need to establish a prompt and independent judiciary to control the phenomenon of corruption.

The ceremony also saw speeches from the President of Rwanda Paul Kagame and UN Special Advocate on the Prevention of Corruption and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center (ROLACC) Dr al-Marri, among others.
