When the 2022 FIFA World Cup come calling in four year’s time, it will be a very different Qatar that will host the quadrennial event.

By then, Qatar will be home to some of the best football stadiums on the face of earth. Work on the iconic Al Rayyan Stadium, which will host some of the key matches of the World Cup, is in full swing will be completed by the second quarter of 2019, reported The Peninsula.   

Eng. Abdulaziz Al Mawlawi, Design and Technical Manager at Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, said they had adopted a new strategy to keep local and international public informed about progress of work at all sports establishments currently under construction, as well as accompanying infrastructure. 

The Al Rayyan Stadium, which will be home ground to one of Qatar’s oldest clubs, will seat up to 40,000 spectators for the World Cup.

The number of seats will be reduced to 23,000 after the tournament and the rest will be donated to support poor countries and help them develop sporting infrastructure.

After completion of work, the stadium will be extensively tested for another six months before being handed over.

All systems will be tested both during summer and winter in order to check on its full readiness to host matches.

The legacy of the stadium will continue well beyond the tournament proper. Situated right next to the Mall of Qatar and a metro station, it will also house a branch of Aspetar Hospital as well as other sports associations.

There will also be a large park, horse track, runway, hockey court, training grounds as well as tennis and cricket grounds.

The stadium has reached 20 million working hours without a  major accident and the current rate of accident is 0.01%, which is equal to the world’s major construction projects.

The stadium is centrally located and is expected to serve generations of people to come in the area.
