First Qatari Female Polo Player Receives Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) Rating

Qatar has reached a new milestone in polo, with the first Qatari female polo player receiving an official rating from the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA), alongside other Qatari players from Qatar Polo Club.

The Hurlingham Polo Association is the governing body for polo in the UK, Ireland and a number of countries worldwide, overseeing areas including the rules of the sport and player handicapping.

What is an HPA rating?

An HPA rating, more commonly known as a polo handicap, is a numerical assessment of a player's playing ability. Under the HPA system, handicaps range from -2 for beginners up to 10 for the highest-rated players.

Unlike a score that simply records a player's past results, the handicap is used as part of polo's competitive structure. The handicaps of players on a team are combined to determine the team's overall handicap, helping organisers create more evenly matched competitions. Tournaments are commonly organised around particular handicap levels or ranges.

Why is the rating significant?

Receiving an official handicap gives a player a recognised competitive rating and is an important step towards participating in organised polo at the relevant level. Within HPA-affiliated polo, players require appropriate HPA membership to take part in chukkas, matches and tournaments, while the handicap system is used to determine where players and teams fit competitively.

For the first Qatari female player to receive such a rating, the achievement is particularly notable. It provides a formal measure of her playing level within an established polo handicapping system while marking progress for Qatari women's participation in the sport.

The milestone also comes alongside HPA ratings for other Qatari players from Qatar Polo Club, strengthening the pathway for local talent to participate in competitive polo and potentially gain greater exposure at tournaments at home and abroad.

The HPA also operates a separate women's handicap system for women-only polo, introduced to reflect differences in playing ability more accurately within the women's game. It uses the same handicap scale as the mixed game.

As more Qatari players obtain recognised handicaps and gain competitive experience, the development represents another step towards building a stronger pool of local polo talent and increasing Qatar's presence within the wider international polo community.
