HE Sheikh Joaan celebrates Qatari athletes’ performances at 4th GCC Games

Team Qatar capped a historic campaign at the 4th GCC Games Doha 2026, winning a record 134 medals, including 48 gold, 50 silver, and 36 bronze, the highest tally in the tournament’s history.

Qatar Olympic Committee President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, who is also president of the Olympic Council of Asia, honoured the athletes and national teams during a celebratory ceremony on Saturday. It was attended by senior Qatar Olympic Committee officials, GCC delegations, and sports leaders.

The achievement highlighted Qatar’s growing sporting stature through competitive success, athlete development, and world-class organisation. Saudi Arabia finished second with 82 medals, while Bahrain placed third with 63.

Held from May 11 to 22, the Games featured more than 1,400 athletes and officials competing in 17 sports. Doha 2026 also reinforced Qatar’s reputation as a leading global sports host, backed by advanced infrastructure and extensive organisational expertise.

Qatar Athletics Federation President Mohammed Issa Al Fadala praised the support of HE Sheikh Joaan and officials after Qatar athletics topped the standings with 34 medals, including 12 gold. Qatar shooting and archery also led their competitions with 26 medals.

Olympic champion Mutaz Barshim described winning high jump gold as special, adding that seeing his father Essa Barshim win silver in the 5000M walk made the Games even more memorable.
