Rare Seahorse Spotted at Khor Al Adaid Nature Reserve

A rare seahorse has been spotted inside Khor Al Adaid Nature Reserve at Sealine Beach, offering an encouraging sign for the health of Qatar’s marine ecosystem.

The Marine Protection Department at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) recorded the seahorse, locally known as Buzaizi, during a field survey aimed at documenting marine species and monitoring their natural habitats.

The survey confirmed the presence of the seahorse in an area covered by seagrass, one of the species’ main natural habitats.

What does the sighting tell us?

According to the Ministry, seahorses are ecologically important marine fish and can serve as useful indicators of the health of marine environments.

Their presence can reflect the availability and condition of habitats needed to support marine biodiversity.

The discovery at Khor Al Adaid therefore highlights the importance of the reserve’s seagrass areas in supporting marine species and maintaining a diverse ecosystem.

Site found to be in good environmental condition

During the field inspection, diving teams assessed the surrounding marine environment and found the site to be in good environmental condition.

The survey also found suitable conditions for the continued presence of the seahorse population.

Importantly, divers observed no visible signs of violations or direct environmental impacts at the surveyed site.

MOECC calls for continued protection

The Ministry stressed the importance of reducing activities that could negatively affect marine life and continuing regular monitoring and protection efforts.

Maintaining healthy habitats will help support the long-term survival of species such as seahorses while protecting Qatar’s wider marine biodiversity.

The latest sighting also demonstrates the role of field surveys in tracking the condition of marine environments and identifying species that depend on them.

For Khor Al Adaid, the presence of the rare Buzaizi seahorse provides a small but significant indicator of the reserve’s environmental health and the importance of continued conservation.
