‘Smart Observer’ boat launched for marine environment monitoring

Qatar’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has unveiled the ‘Smart Observer’ boat, an unmanned, digitally controlled platform designed to monitor the marine environment by automatically collecting samples and data from sea sites.

The initiative aims to modernise Qatar’s environmental monitoring system, improve data quality and support evidence-based decision-making, in line with National Development Strategy 2030 goals.

Assistant Director of the Environmental Monitoring and Inspection Department Abdullah Al Khulaifi said the vessel uses advanced technologies and three control modes - manual, antenna-based remote control and Starlink - allowing continuous operation for six to seven hours and simultaneous measurement of multiple environmental variables.

The boat was built to the ministry’s technical specifications, and comparative tests showed its readings closely match traditional manual measurements. Following a successful pilot phase, the ministry plans to expand the project with additional, more advanced boats.

International sustainability expert Dr Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari described Smart Observer as a qualitative step that shifts Qatar from traditional field monitoring to smart, continuous measurement.

He said the system will deliver real-time data, broaden coverage of marine and coastal areas, reduce the need for risky field missions, and strengthen early warning for pollution, fish kills and harmful algal blooms.

Al Kuwari noted the project supports Qatar National Vision 2030, the Third National Development Strategy (2024-2030) and UN Sustainable Development Goals such as Life Below Water, climate action, and innovation.

He called for integrating artificial intelligence, expanding to a national network of smart boats, linking with satellites, drones and coastal stations, and developing advanced sensors and an interactive data platform.

He said Smart Observer is a strategic investment that can evolve into an advanced national system for marine environmental monitoring and smart resource management.
