Kuwait's Amir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber has died at age 91, Kuwait News Agency announced yesterday evening.

Sheikh Sabah had been the leader of Kuwait since 2006 and had served as the country's foreign minister for almost 40 years from 1963 - 2003 before becoming the prime minister.

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has mourned the demise of the Kuwaiti Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

The Amiri Diwan announced that absentee funeral prayer (Salat al-Gha'ib in Arabic) will be performed for the late HH Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber in all the mosques in Qatar tonight after the evening prayer (Isha).

This comes as a tremendous loss for Qatar and its people that have always held Sheikh Sabah in high regard and appreciated his consistent efforts to ensure peace and stability in the Gulf region.

HH the Amir participated in the funeral prayer on the body of HH Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber at Bilal bin Rabah Mosque in Kuwait.

HH the Amir of Qatar yesterday declared a three-day mourning period in Qatar and ordered flags to be at half-mast.
