With the ambition to promote friendly relations between Qatar and Portugal, The Advisory Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Portuguese Assembly yesterday.

Qatar’s side was represented by His Excellency the Speaker of the Advisory Council Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud while Portugal’s was represented by the President of the Portuguese Assembly Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues.

Under the agreement, the Advisory Council and the Portuguese Assembly will work in a partnership to enhance relations between the two sides, paving the way for further cooperation.

Both parties agreed to establish two parliamentary groups of friendship to facilitate the exchange of expertise and collaboration across unifying positions of common interest on topics in international conferences, meetings, and forums.

The two sides concurred with supporting each other in appointing leadership positions of international parliamentary organizations.

The agreement will also allow knowledge sharing between the two countries in different fields such as legislative work and internal organization.

The signing of the MoU was part of a meeting held between the two sides to review Qatar-Portugal parliamentary relations.

During the meeting, the officials discussed ways to develop relations between the two countries in addition to exchanging views on issues of mutual concern.

Several members of the Advisory Council, as well as Qatar’s ambassador the Portuguese Republic, Saad bin Ali al-Bin Ali Al Mohannadi, also joined the meeting.

Additionally, on the sidelines of his official visit to Portugal, HE Al Mahmoud also met the Chairman of Twelve Plus Group, Duarte Pacheco.

The group comprises the parliaments of the European countries, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

The meeting looked into parliamentary relations between Qatar and the Twelve Plus Group and highlighted ways of consolidating them further.

Earlier this year, Portugal was also one of the 160 participating countries in the 140th Inter-Parliamentary Union assembly, which was hosted by Doha.
