We are now in the last few days of the holy month of Ramadan. This is a time when Muslims further increase their acts of worship and make extra efforts to seek Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.
‘Qiyam-ul-layl’ which means to ‘stand during the night’ is practiced during this time.
It is a voluntary prayer offered between the time of Ishaa prayer and the Fajr prayer (before dawn). However, the most preferred time is before sunrise, in the last third of the night.
‘Qiyam-ul-layl’ holds great rewards and blessings for any Muslim who sacrifices his or her sleep to stand in front of Allah (SWT) and pray to Him.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is known to have said, “The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.” (Sahih Muslim).
The significance of Qiyam-ul-layl is stated in the Quran on several occasions:
"And some part of the night keep vigil for it as an additional prayer for you; maybe that your Lord will raise you up to a praised position." – Al Israa (17:79).
