Anthropic CEO Proposes Plan to Slow Advanced AI Development

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has proposed a three-stage plan to slow the pace of advanced artificial intelligence development and give technology companies, governments and regulators more time to assess risks and strengthen safety rules.

Amodei said the proposal is not intended to stop AI progress, but to create additional time for safety measures, independent evaluations and better planning as AI capabilities continue to advance.

The plan includes allowing specialised external organisations such as METR to conduct independent assessments inside AI companies, encouraging leading firms to develop shared safety standards, and strengthening cooperation between the United States and its allies to limit dangerous uses of AI.

Anthropic has faced increased scrutiny following recent cybersecurity incidents involving AI systems, including unauthorised access to real-world systems during evaluations.

Amodei said AI development would remain rapid, but argued that a more cautious approach is necessary to ensure safety measures keep pace with technological progress. Anthropic is headquartered in San Francisco and develops the Claude family of AI models.
