Autumn 2026 in Qatar: Desert Camping, Beaches and Dhow Cruises

From October into November, Qatar's outdoor season begins to take shape: temperatures start easing, evenings become more comfortable and the desert, beaches and Doha's waterfront become much more appealing.

But there is an important distinction to understand before planning a camping trip.

Qatar's official winter camping season is a regulated programme for seasonal camps at designated land, coastal and nature-reserve sites. Under the latest confirmed 2025–26 rules, the person applying for one of these seasonal permits had to be a Qatari national aged 25 or over. It was not a general permit available to every expatriate resident.

Residents and visitors still have plenty of other ways to enjoy the outdoors, including public beaches, desert safaris, licensed tourism camps and overnight desert experiences.

As of 9 September 2026, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has not yet published the final 2026–27 winter camping dates, registration timetable or conditions, so the figures below use the 2025–26 season as the latest confirmed reference.

Two things shape the outdoor calendar: the official winter camping season, which last year ran for six months from mid-October, and the shift towards earlier sunsets and milder weather that makes late-afternoon desert trips and dhow cruises more comfortable.

When does Qatar's outdoor season actually start?

For the 2025–26 winter camping season, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change set the official season from 15 October 2025 to 15 April 2026.

Weather-wise, October is better described as the transition into Qatar's outdoor season, rather than the peak of it. November through February offers more consistently mild conditions; Qatar Tourism describes winter temperatures during this period as generally around 15°C–20°C.

So October evenings can already be pleasant, but daytime conditions — particularly early in the month — may still be hot.

Desert camping in Qatar: permits, fees and how to register

Qatar's official winter camping permit is for designated seasonal campsites. Under the 2025–26 rules, applicants had to be Qatari nationals aged at least 25. MECC's winter-camping service is specifically described as granting land and coastal camping permits to citizens.

For residents or visitors wanting an occasional overnight desert experience, alternatives include licensed tourism camps, commercial desert camps and organised safari operators. Qatar Tourism has a separate licensing framework covering commercial day camps and 3-, 4- and 5-star overnight tourism camps.

Camping permit fees and deposits

Under the latest confirmed 2025–26 winter camping regulations:

• Permit fee — QAR 3,000 for land, coastal and nature-reserve winter camps.
• Refundable security deposit — QAR 10,000, subject to compliance with the Ministry's conditions.
• Changing the campsite — QAR 1,000 where a location is changed after the permit has been issued but before the site has been formally fixed by the responsible inspector.

That was the rate under an older fee regime. Ministerial Decision No. 21 of 2024 reduced the new-permit fee to QAR 3,000 across land, marine/coastal and nature-reserve camps.

For 2025–26, retirees and persons with disabilities were exempt from the QAR 3,000 permit fee, although the QAR 10,000 security deposit still applied.

Registration was completed through MECC's electronic winter-camping system using Qatar's National Authentication System, with payment by debit or credit card.

Rules you need to know before you pitch a tent

Under the 2025–26 seasonal-camping rules:

• The permit is personal and may not be rented, advertised for rent or transferred.
• Only one winter camping permit per person per season is permitted.
• Permit fees are non-refundable after payment.
• The QAR 10,000 security deposit can be forfeited for violations or failure to comply with the applicable procedures.
• The campsite number must be displayed so inspectors can identify the permitted site.
• The Ministry can inspect camps and act against environmental or safety violations.

Do not assume that obtaining a seasonal permit allows you to set up anywhere you choose. Camps must be in designated areas and assigned locations.

Likewise, ordinary day trips, licensed commercial desert camps and tourism experiences should not be confused with this six-month seasonal camping system.

Best desert camping and beach spots for October–November

Qatar has several established outdoor destinations, but the rules and access conditions differ considerably from one location to another.

Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid) — best for the ultimate overnight

Khor Al Adaid, or the Inland Sea, is one of Qatar's most distinctive natural landscapes, where large dunes meet a tidal inlet close to the Saudi border.

It is a protected nature reserve and has been on Qatar's UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List since 2008. It is not currently an inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Access is the bigger consideration: Visit Qatar says Khor Al Adaid can only be reached by 4x4 through desert terrain and recommends guided desert safari tours for visitors without suitable off-road experience.

There are also licensed commercial camps and resorts in the wider Khor Al Adaid/Sealine area, making an organised overnight stay a practical alternative for residents who cannot personally apply for a seasonal winter-camping permit.

Do not describe Khor Al Adaid simply as carrying a “higher coastal permit bracket”: under the latest winter-camping fee structure, seasonal permits for land, coastal and nature-reserve sites were all QAR 3,000.

Zekreet — best for stargazing and photography

On Qatar's west coast, Zekreet Beach, also known as Ras Abrouq Beach, is known for its limestone escarpments, unusual rock formations and relatively remote landscape.

Visit Qatar specifically highlights both camping and rock formations among its attractions.

The original access advice can be improved: Visit Qatar says it is possible to drive to Zekreet Beach in a standard car, although a 4x4 is more comfortable. If you intend to leave established tracks or explore rougher areas, a suitable vehicle remains the safer choice.

As with other environmentally sensitive areas, follow current access restrictions and camping instructions rather than assuming every open patch of desert is available for a seasonal camp.

Al Ghariya and Maroona beaches — best for families

Al Ghariya and Maroona remain good recommendations for families looking for a quieter coastal day out.

Visit Qatar describes Al Ghariya as family-friendly, suitable for camping and characterised by shallow water, while recommending a 4x4 for easier beach access.

Maroona is similarly known for golden sand and calm, shallow water, making it popular for swimming, picnics and family outings.

However, remove the statement that overnight campers should automatically budget for a higher coastal QAR 10,000 permit. There was no higher coastal permit fee under the 2025–26 rules.

If planning an overnight rather than a daytime beach visit, check the current location-specific camping rules once the 2026–27 season is announced.

Dhow cruises in Doha: sunset on the water

If you want an outdoor experience without a desert-camping setup, a sunset dhow cruise is a straightforward option.

Several operators run shared and private dhow experiences, but price, children's policies, departure points and timings vary, so the article should avoid presenting one operator's terms as a Qatar-wide standard.

What a Doha dhow cruise costs

A useful current benchmark is Discover Qatar's official Discover Dhow Sunset Cruise.

As of September 2026, it is listed at:

• QAR 150 per person
• 2-hour duration
• Daily departures.

The original wording “QAR 150 total” is incorrect. QAR 150 is the per-person price for this shared tour.

Other current options illustrate how widely pricing can vary. National Cruise lists its two-hour sunset cruise from QAR 150 per adult, while promotional offers have dropped that price to QAR 75 at certain times. Another operator currently lists a two-hour product from QAR 200.

So a better rule is:

Expect roughly QAR 150 per adult as a mainstream shared-cruise benchmark, but compare current operator prices and offers before booking.

Child policies also vary. National Cruise currently states that children below four can travel free under its policy, while other operators use different age bands. Don't publish “under-fives always free” as a general Qatar-wide rule.

Best routes and timings

Discover Qatar currently operates its sunset schedule as:

• March–September: 5pm–7pm
• October–February: 4pm–6pm.

That makes the article's 4pm–6pm autumn timing accurate for this particular product, but not for every dhow company.

For example, a separate current National Cruise promotion continues to advertise 5pm–7pm through 16 October 2026.

So phrase it as:

Many sunset-cruise schedules move earlier as sunset shifts through autumn; Discover Qatar currently operates 4pm–6pm from October to February.

Doha's actual sunset also moves noticeably during October — from around 5:20pm at the start of the month to about 4:53pm by 31 October 2026.

Discover Qatar's current route includes The Pearl, Katara Cultural Village, West Bay, the Corniche, Mina District and Stadium 974, rather than simply Corniche–Katara–The Pearl.

Plan your autumn weekend: a quick packing and prep checklist

• Check the 2026–27 camping announcement first — don't assume last year's dates or registration conditions automatically carry over.
• Know which type of camping you're doing — a six-month seasonal winter camp is different from a commercial overnight camp or desert safari.
• Use the right vehicle — Khor Al Adaid requires a 4x4, while access conditions vary elsewhere.
• Carry water, sun protection and essential supplies — many public beaches and remote desert areas have limited facilities.
• Take all waste with you and follow MECC's environmental rules.
• Check weather and sea conditions before remote desert, beach or boat trips.
• Book cruises against the actual operator schedule rather than assuming every dhow runs 4pm–6pm.
• Confirm the child fare and departure point because these differ between cruise operators.
