In a recent study conducted by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), one in four adults use tobacco or tobacco products in Qatar.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has explained that smokers are at higher risk of developing severe disease and death from COVID-19.
Moreover, it can reduce the body’s ability to use oxygen and puts you at a higher risk of many tobacco-related diseases.
Some of which include pneumonia, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory diseases.
However, the cessation of tobacco products is proven to be effective in reducing the risk of heart and lung diseases, in addition to protecting those exposed to secondhand smoke.
Smoking can also be the cause of other diseases and health problems such as skin wrinkles, pregnancy complications, osteoporosis, impotence, and peptic ulcer disease.
60 percent of smokers do not realize that even small amounts a day, such as one cigarette a day, can increase the risk of disease.
Completely quitting smoking is very hard and people who quit often tend to relapse back into this unhealthy habit after some time.
This does not mean that it is impossible. The first step is always realizing and accepting that you are a smoking addict.
By doing so, you are paving the path for your healing journey. Never think that you are alone and do not be afraid to ask for help.

Qatar has been taking steps towards helping smokers in the country to commit to quitting by implementing Tobacco Law No. 10 2016 and creating awareness on the dangers of smoking through campaigns.
Furthermore, smokers are encouraged to book an appointment and visit HMC’s facilities which are dedicated to smoking cessation so that they can get the help they deserve.
HMC’s Tobacco Control Center had launched two new clinics at Al Wakra Hospital and Hazm Mebaireek General Hospital with the aim of reaching even more smokers in Qatar.
The Center had continued to treat and support people who wanted to quit smoking even throughout the pandemic.
HMC also provides behavioral counseling for smokers who wish to lead a healthier lifestyle.
