The 11th General Assembly of the Global Public Diplomacy Network (GPDNet) will begin in Doha on Monday, bringing together representatives of member institutions from 29 countries across the world’s continents. Participants will discuss ways to develop the network’s work, expand international cooperation and strengthen the role of public diplomacy, culture and soft power in building bridges of communication and understanding between peoples.
Speaking at a press conference, General Manager of the Cultural Village Foundation – Katara and President of GPDNet Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti said Katara’s hosting of the meeting reflects its commitment to supporting joint international action. He added that it also strengthens the network’s role as an effective platform for public diplomacy, cultural exchange and dialogue among institutions and peoples.
He explained that the meeting provides an opportunity to review achievements, exchange views on developing the network’s work, explore new prospects for cooperation and launch practical initiatives with a sustainable impact. He noted that Katara won the confidence of the majority of member countries and institutions last year when they voted to nominate it for a third term as president of the network, recognising its role during the previous two terms and its efforts to develop the network’s work and strengthen its international presence.
Dr. Al Sulaiti stressed that Katara’s continued presidency of the network for three consecutive terms represents an additional responsibility and an incentive to continue working and improve its performance. He said the vision for the next phase is based on investing in knowledge and young talent, keeping pace with digital development and strengthening cooperation among member institutions to expand the influence of public diplomacy.
Secretary-General of GPDNet Maryam Majid Al Saad said the network’s membership, comprising 29 countries from different continents, reflects geographic and cultural diversity that creates broader opportunities to exchange expertise and develop joint initiatives.
She said the General Assembly meetings will examine opportunities to launch cultural and knowledge-exchange programmes and organise joint events among member institutions. She expressed hope that the meetings would produce practical recommendations that can be transformed into projects and programmes with a sustainable impact.
