Mathaf invites 20,000 people to help break Guinness World Record

Mathaf: The Arab Museum of Modern Art has launched a community initiative titled "Funnel", bringing together 20,000 people from across Qatar to contribute to the implementation of a large-scale sculpture of papier-mâché made of biomaterials, to be registered in the Guinness Book of World Records, for the largest number of people who make papier-mâché.

Supported by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and the Ministry of Municipality, participants in the project will contribute to the preparation and formation of a mixture of paved paper made from palm leaf waste and recycled pages from Mathaf's previous exhibition brochures, through hands-on workshops.

The name "funnel" comes from the Arabic word for the small part that connects the date fruit to its neck, and inspired by it, the sculpture transforms a familiar element of Qatar's cultural scene into a space where participants converge, contemplate and complete the project.

Madrasa students successfully developed the idea through workshops led by Mathaf's Education and Outreach Department, during which they explored the museum's history, architecture and collections that can inspire design based on shared experiences.

In this context, Ms. Zeina Arida, Director of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, stressed that art is capable of creating spaces for communication, sharing and engaging in shared experiences, calling on community members, through the sculpture "Funnel", to be part of the artwork itself, in addition to exploring how to transform materials rooted in the environment and memory into a new value, carrying with it a collective narrative, which makes the project go beyond the production of a sculpture, to the momentum of the experience itself that the participants are going through to work on its completion.

Mathaf announced the opening of registration to participate in the "Funnel" initiative, inviting individuals and families of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to contribute to the achievement of the artwork, provided that registration will continue until the nineteenth of next month.
