Amid great fanfare, the 2,240SqM Al Thuraya Planetarium at the Katara Cultural Village was opened to the public yesterday.

The facility, which boasts of interactive, hi-tech features, was opened during the Qatar National Day celebrations, reported Qatar Tribune.

Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti inaugurated the planetarium located in Building 45, which also has Qatar’s first astronomical dome.

The facility is named after Thuraya (Seven Sisters), a cluster of seven bright stars (the Pleiades M45), which was known since prehistoric times when ancient astronomers used to observe it frequently.

“The new planetarium will be suitable for all age groups as it has interactive features that give visitors a great idea about astronomy in an interesting and simplified manner. The shows will be available in two languages — English and Arabic,” Al Sulaiti was quoted as saying by Qatar Tribune.

The Al Thuraya planetarium features a planetarium hall with a seating capacity of 200 people. Four seats have been reserved for people with disabilities and another four for the elderly.

It is highlighted by a huge 22M screen, equipped with state-of-the-art digital projectors featuring 2D and 3D tutorial shows.

A vast terrace overlooking the sea will serve as a platform for events and activities.
