Nearly 108,000 kilogrammes of fresh dates were sold during the first nine days of the 11th Local Dates Festival, organised by the Ministry of Municipality in cooperation with Souq Waqif Management.
The Ministry said the festival attracted 61,000 visitors between its opening on July 25 and the end of its ninth day, reflecting strong demand for locally grown dates and support for Qatari agricultural products.
Total sales reached 107,999 kilogrammes. The Khalas variety led sales with 44,247 kilogrammes, followed by Shishi with 22,780 kilogrammes and Khenaizi with 21,118 kilogrammes.
Barhi sales reached 11,892 kilogrammes, while other varieties accounted for 7,962 kilogrammes.
The festival continues until Monday, August 10, with broad participation from Qatari farms offering local date varieties and a selection of seasonal fruits.
Its programme includes daily competitions, prizes, cultural and educational activities for families, and an awareness seminar organised with the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs on the rules governing zakat on palm trees and fruit.
The Ministry of Municipality has also launched local date sales and marketing activities at Doha Festival City, Villaggio Mall and Landmark Mall to expand access to local produce during the season.
Sales at the three shopping centres have so far reached 5,232 kilogrammes of dates and 370 kilogrammes of other fruits, with 24 local farms taking part.
