Lusail City has achieved two Guinness World Records, with Qatari Diar announcing global recognition for its district cooling system, reinforcing Qatar's leadership in sustainable urban development and infrastructure.
According to Qatari Diar, Lusail City's integrated district cooling network has been recognised as the world's largest district cooling network, extending 123.5 kilometres and connecting cooling plants, power transmission stations, and buildings through an advanced pipeline system equipped with smart leak detection technology, distributed isolation valves, and service tunnels to ensure efficient operation and maintenance.
The project also secured a second Guinness World Record for the world's tallest chilled water storage tank. Located at the Lusail North District Cooling Plant, the tank stands 46.041 metres high, measures 32 metres in diameter, and has a 12,000-ton cooling capacity. It stores chilled water during periods of low demand and releases it during peak hours, improving the system's overall energy efficiency by up to 14%.
Sheikh Hamad bin Talal Al Thani, Chief Executive Officer of Qatari Diar, described the achievement as a significant milestone for Lusail City and a reflection of Qatar's long-term vision to develop world-class, sustainable urban communities. He said the recognition highlights the successful integration of advanced infrastructure with modern urban planning while strengthening Lusail City's position as a leading smart city.
Engineer Ahmed Abdul Qader Al-Ammari, Chief Executive Officer of Marafiq Qatar, said the recognition is the result of more than 15 years of planning, investment, and development, demonstrating the operational excellence and sustainability of Qatar's infrastructure projects.
District cooling is one of the most energy-efficient air conditioning solutions, significantly reducing electricity consumption and environmental impact. Once fully completed, Lusail City's district cooling system is expected to deliver a total cooling capacity of approximately 630,000 refrigeration tons, making it one of the largest and most advanced systems of its kind in the world.
