In alignment with the Qatar National Vision 2030, The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has set a target of switching public transport to electric by the year 2030. It has estimated a goal of turning 35% vehicles and 100% buses electric in the next seven years.

Qatar National Vision 2030 aims to propel Qatar into an advanced society with sustainable development as a key objective. The Minister of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC), HE Sheikh Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ai Al Thani reveals that this goal is achievable by deploying clean energy, solar energy, electric transportation sources and limiting the use of environmental pollutants.

In a video tweet shared by the Government Communications Office (GCO) on the occasion of Earth Day (April 22), he elaborates on Qatar’s relentless work in the last couple of years in enhancing awareness in society of the local ecosystem and ways to preserve it.

The video also included a message from the Ministry of Transport’s Acting Undersecretary for Land Transport Affair, Eng Hamad Essa Abdullah who remarked on Qatar’s intentions to be a pioneer in the transition to electric energy.

Abdullah also revealed that MoT is anticipating having at least 35% of vehicles convert to electric energy by 2030, while 100% of buses will be electric.

The video tweet by GCO also highlights Qatar’s steps toward addressing of environmental challenges and promoting sustainability efforts.

Lusail Bus Depot, with its capacity of 478 buses, was awarded the Largest Electric Bus Depot certificate in October 2022 by Guinness World Records. Being the first of its kind in the Middle East, Lusail Bus Depot relies on 11,000 PV solar panels to generate 4 MW daily. 

Another project that will propel the country toward the 2030 vision is the Al Kharsaah Power Plant. The plant has a capacity of 800 megawatts and is expected to be a vital utility power source for Qatar in the coming years.
