As several countries around the world began imposing travel restrictions, under preventive measures against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), many families and individuals have been affected by sudden decisions.

This has meant that many airlines that were earlier operating on certain routes have ceased operations amid entry restrictions and airport closures.

In light of this, Qatar Airways (QA) has been serving as an essential link between stranded travelers and their home countries. 

According to a tweet on the airline's official Twitter page, QA operated special charter flights from March 30 to April 1, 2020, to take Omani students studying abroad back to Oman.

The airline provided a vital lifeline to these Omani nationals, QA said. 

The airline added that it will bring back home Omani students from Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.

His Excellency Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker said, "We know there are many people who want to be with their families and loved ones during this difficult time, and our priority as an airline is to help get them home."

"We are thankful to the Omani authorities and the management and staff at Muscat International Airport for their support in making these charter flights to Muscat possible," he added.

The CEO of QA: "We know that many of you are eager to return to your families at this difficult time, and our highest priority is to help you find a way back to your loved ones. We would like to thank the Omani authorities & the Administration of Muscat International Airport."

According to HE Al Baker, the airline continues to operate around 130 daily flights to more than 60 cities worldwide.

"Each day new entry restrictions are put in place that prevent us from operating our regular scheduled flights. However, we continue to work closely with governments around the world, and wherever possible we will reinstate or operate charter flights," he said.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the airline has already helped to repatriate Pakistani, Filipino, Indian, Swiss, American, British, Canadian and French citizens as charters had been organized by their respective governments to ensure their citizens return to their homes and families safe. 

Additionally, QA continues to offer maximum flexibility to passengers in terms of managing their travel plans.

Those who have booked or are planning to book tickets for travel up to 30 September 2020 with QA, can change their travel date free of charge.

Passengers also have an option to exchange their ticket for a future travel voucher that would be valid for one year, up to three days before departure. This includes award flights.

In addition to helping people get home, the airline has also been playing a crucial role with its cargo carriers. Earlier, in February, the airline transported 300 tonnes of medical supplies to China to help the country in the fight against COVID-19. 

QA also flew relief aid from Qatar to Iran in March 2020.
