Qatar and Uzbekistan strengthen cultural ties through Islamic heritage conference in Tashkent

Qatar is participating in the International Conference on Islamic Cultural Heritage in Uzbekistan and its Role in Global Scientific Pathways, taking place in Tashkent from September 7 to 9.

The conference aims to strengthen oriental and civilisational studies through academic and cultural exchange, while promoting dialogue between different cultures and civilisations.

Qatar’s delegation is headed by the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Qatar Committee for the Alliance of Civilizations.

The opening was attended by senior Uzbek officials, alongside professors, researchers and experts from Qatar and several other countries.

Exploring the scientific legacy of Islamic civilisation

A key focus of the conference is the contribution of scholars associated with Uzbekistan and the wider Islamic world to global scientific development.

Among those highlighted are Al-Khwarizmi, Al-Biruni, Ibn Sina and Imam Bukhari, whose work contributed to fields including:

• Mathematics
• Geometry
• Algebra
• Earth sciences
• Chemistry
• Medicine
• Philosophy
• Islamic studies

The conference seeks to demonstrate how this scientific and cultural legacy influenced the development of knowledge beyond the region and continues to form part of a shared human heritage.

Part of Qatar’s Alliance of Civilizations programme

In his address, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the conference forms part of Qatar’s civilisational diplomacy programme, included within the country’s Alliance of Civilizations plan for 2023–2027.

The programme aims to highlight Islamic cities and centres of learning that played an important role in the development of global science and culture.

The event is also the result of cooperation between the Qatar Committee for the Alliance of Civilizations, Qatar University and Tashkent University for Oriental Studies.

Qatar-Uzbekistan cultural cooperation continues to grow

The conference builds on a series of cultural exchanges between Qatar and Uzbekistan in recent years.

These have included Uzbek Culture Week in Doha in February 2024 and Qatari Cultural Days in Tashkent in October 2024.

Qatar has also participated in cultural initiatives connected to the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan, a major project focused on highlighting Islamic contributions to human development, preserving manuscripts and supporting scientific research and intercultural dialogue.

Promoting dialogue through cultural diplomacy

The conference places particular emphasis on the role of cultural and civilisational diplomacy in bringing societies closer together.

By highlighting shared heritage and encouraging academic collaboration, organisers hope to create new opportunities for cooperation between Qatar and Uzbekistan across cultural, scientific and educational fields.

Qatar’s delegation expressed hope that the conference will produce recommendations that help further promote Uzbekistan’s Islamic civilisational heritage and its contribution to contemporary global scientific knowledge.
