Bassem Hameida Wins Asian Games 400m Hurdles Gold for Qatar

Qatari hurdler Bassem Hameida won gold in the men's 400-metre hurdles at the 20th Asian Games, Aichi-Nagoya 2026, on Monday, securing Qatar's third gold medal of the Games.

The 26-year-old produced a strong finish to overcome Japan's Taigo Goto and cross the line in 47.82 seconds. Goto took silver in 47.93 seconds, while Chinese Taipei's Chung Wei-lin claimed bronze in 48.74 seconds.

Hameida had qualified for the final after topping his semifinal heat in 49.55 seconds. The victory adds another Asian Games medal to his record after he won silver at Hangzhou 2023.

At the previous edition, Hameida finished behind fellow Qatari Abderrahman Samba. Samba missed Aichi-Nagoya 2026 after suffering an injury during the qualifying rounds.

The final also featured athletes from Japan, Chinese Taipei, India, Sri Lanka and Kazakhstan. Hameida entered the race with the fastest personal best among the finalists, having recorded 47.56 seconds last August.

Hameida's victory raised Qatar's tally to three gold medals at the Games. Rashid Al Athba previously won the men's skeet competition, while Qatar also claimed gold in the men's skeet team event.
